The Hanged Man
oil paint on canvas
76 x 51 cm
2018

Esbenshade’s work The Hanged Man is a still-life ruminating on death and knowledge. Pulling from a variety of mythic backgrounds the tableau features a range of symbols: a cow’s skull, a silver cup and plate, a pomegranate and a tarot card, all examining our quest to ‘know’. Ignorance must not be bliss if we’re always willing to sacrifice ourselves to gain it, and accept violent change once we do.
